McGill Rose Garden
McGill Rose Garden, NoDa
Completed April 2018
For this unique space, a hidden gem in Charlotte, three “coloring-book" style murals were created based on suggestions and artwork submitted by UMAR participants, an art center for adults with developmental and intellectual disabilities. Sean Reilly, participant and owner of Sean’s Topiaries, helped design the "secret garden" panel located in his topiary working section at McGill. Participant Kenna Johnston submitted drawings that were turned into the floral motif on the exterior wall at the front of the garden. Other participants & aids gave suggestions of artists to be depicted on the largest wall, artists that inspired them.
Brand the Moth Director, Sam Guzzie, painted outlines of these final designs on the respective walls for volunteers to collaboratively paint side by side with people helping from both UMAR and UNION, a local digital marketing agency who's entire staff took time to support this project. This was a such an amazing community project that allowed UMAR to contribute in giving back to McGill Rose Garden, who's supported their members and programs for years, while also providing the chance to work together with other community members on a collective project. It is so important for adults with disabilities to have outlets and opportunities within the community rather than be isolated from it and this project was designed to do just that. Volunteers spent two days between March and April cleaning up the gardens, prepping the walls and painting in the mural designs.

This project inspired local businesses The Artisan’s Palate and Shop Personal to design "Art In the Garden", an evening garden party event benefiting Brand the Moth and McGill Rose Garden, sponsored by Shutterfly. With craft cocktails & a curated menu from Chef Christa Csoka, and live painting with local artists, the murals served as a beautiful backdrop for the event. All funds raised went towards preserving the murals and further community projects with Brand the Moth.
